My computer which is around 5 years old is
a) sometimes making a terrible noise for hours, sounds like a bearing or the main fan in the power box thing
b) sometimes very hot
c) resitting it's date and time to the 1st Jan 2004 when being turned on
d) running slow.
New one? |

Check that the fan is not clogged with dust and fluff....maybe a quick hoover with attachment might help clear it - also internal battery may have died hence clock resetting....but I am no expert just advising from similar experience......
Defragment and clear cache etc might speed things up - also take off anything that is unnecessary. |

1 and 2 are probably related.
Download Speedfan from here: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
It should show the temperatures of various bits; If there's anything over 60 degrees celsius, you have a serious dust problem.
Date resetting is usually the battery on the motherboard. They're a pretty standard size usually, last one I changed was the same as my car keys.
As for running slow, has the computer ever had a proper cleanout and reinstall?
In the meantime Spybot: Search & Destroy can make sure it's not nasties that are causing the speed issue: http://download.cnet.com/Spybot-Search-amp-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html?tag=mncol |

Have you got a recent back up? If not, I'd take one pronto - just in case the whole thing dies on you. |

You lot are fantastic. I didn't even know motherboards had batteries. I had already hoovered out the fans and the case, and I am downloading the fan thing now. |

what a disappointment, a computer problem has been described, diagnosed and will soon be fixed without me being able to contribute to a pointless argument about operating systems. |

75!
Most computers will forcibly turn themselves off at about 80, but that can be a bit too late, depending on the quality of the components. |
