Well after a dose of Flu knocked a month out of my life I returned to the fray.
Checked... Windows explorer file manager still crashes. Also found Windows backup non-functional.

Have you tried running a Linux live cd? Should enable you to copy the files.

Googling around suggests that the Windows explorer problem is not unheard of... but there doesn't seem to be an easy fix. Your copy command should do the job. Thanks.

A quick google highlights quite a range of LPG gas powered instant hot water heaters. You'd have to check power ratings and flow rates to see how long you'd have to wait for your bath though....
