If it might be organic-based grease maybe try soaking in a biological stain remover (ie Biotex) or a biological washing powder

I picked up a tip from 'somewhere'

Sprinkle the moss with bicarbonate of soda

Moss turns black in about a week and is then easy to brush up

Worked for me and the moss has not returned
