I think the base was stretched on a frame and the ladies were sitting by the kitchen fire, so if it was on a stand it was a small

If it was long strips,with a short looped look to it it's a hooky mat, if it used short strips and had a tufted finish, its a a proggy.

My gran taught me proggy years ago, although I've not done it ...

I still use our old family clothes horse for drying clothes!! Its old cloth hinges fell apart years ago, but I have cunningly replaced them with old tights legs

It looks very pretty but what's wrong with a plastic bag that you wash and reuse?

Nothing whatsoever! I just thought this might be a more hardwearing alternative.
