untreated soft wood
treated soft wood
tropical hardwood such as teak (ethical ?s etc )
oak (needs proper wood ,good prep and maintenance )

None are what you'd call cheap but with a bottle jack, a few bolts and pieces of heavy timber you can make one very easily. Plenty of examples on the internet.
