|
Its finally out! After more years of research than I care to mention, 'The Artifice of Beauty, a history and practical guide to perfumes and cosmetics' is finally on the shelves.
Written by a re-enactor/archaeologist/early perfume specialist this covers the evidence for cosmetics and perfumes from prehistory to the twentieth century, with as many examples of primary sources as possible, and reconstructions of dozens of cosmetics.
From the downsizing perspective it includes lots of information about traditional cosmetic ingredients and their relative safety, and many of the recipes are suitable for modern use, so may help those wishing to switch from complicated commercial soaps and potions to things they make themselves, it also helps us to understand that adornment has ben going on 'forever' which is interesting when compared to current beauty industry trends.
Its available now through Amazon but they do have the 'wrong' cover- the real one shows a face in reconstructed Egyptian cosmetics!

Please feel free to pass details of this book on to others- its easily available now in the UK, should be available in the US within a few days, and your library should be able to order it now, though you may need to take them the ISBN and details as its very new on the lists. Do ask your library for it- much the best way to make sure its easily available right across the country and it also means you don't have to part with your hard earned cash to have a look at it
Am waiting with nervous anticipation for the first reviews, this has been a very interesting and quite scary adventure and it still seems a bit surreal to have it sitting in front of me.
all the best
Sally

Will try, its one of those 'different appraoch for every book' things, but having self published as well as now having done the whole agent and publisher thing, I can certainly rustle up some rough and ready guidelines. Will add it to my to do list! |
