Years ago OH & I bought a folding floor loom (a Harris one). It was old & sad and had been stored for years when we got it. We cleaned up the reed, which was rusty, warped it and wove a couple of rugs. Then we moved house ... to a bigger place with a garage & a shed - so we didn't use it!!!

We built an extension a few years ago, thinking that it could go in the big new room - which it did, folded.

Finally we got it out last week and I've been weaving again. I finished the last rug on the warp and as I had some spare warp in the stash, I've spent the last couple of days re-warping ready to weave some more rugs.

I'm really enjoying it (even the endless hours tying warps together, checking the order, re-threading, adjusting tension etc)

As I've been spending so much time at the back of the loom I noticed a little metal peg tied to the side beam and I have no idea what it's for - any clues anyone?

There it is, tied to the side beam under the lease rods - any clues? Sorry the picture is so dark , the light in here isn't great for photos.

This is the rug that spent the last several years half-finished on the folded loom, the fist bit (closer to the camera) is rather wonky & tight, the later bit that I did recently is much better - so perhaps it's not true what they say about practice! It isn't finished off yet - loads of ends to snip, the spacer at the start to unravel and the warp ends need tying in, but at least it's off the loom!

I have loom envy. I bought a table loom and was convinced I would be better off with a lathe .. loom went to niece. I regret it daily

Love the rug,

Thanks
Just started to weave the next one - seem to be doing more unpicking than weaving atm - keep finding crossed warps & making mistakes, but I'm learning all the time.

I'm still puzzled by this peg though! It doesn't seem to do anything, but I daren't untie it just in case.

I am supposed to be helping with warping up something similar on the 14th - I'll have a squiz and see if there is a relevant peg and report back

Finished the rug (well, finished weaving & snipping off ends, now I'm just about to cut it off the loom & tie off the warp fringe.)

Next problem: Selling it.

I don't think you'll have trouble selling it, it's lovely

That's gorgeous........and I too am having serious Loom envy. Only yesterday I was admiring a shawl someone had made using Angora wool - purple and grey - it was wonderful to look at and to the touch.

I think I've worked out what the pin is - it seems to be to stop the beater bar / reed falling forwards when the loom is folded. It was tightly tied to the sidebar of the loom by the previous owner - we bought it folded so I've never untied this pin & hadn't seen it until recently.

I managed to get a set of instructions for tying up & setting up - I googled the company and although they no longer seem to sell this model, they very kindly emailed me a pdf of the literature - but it doesn't actually mention this pin! )

Took the finished rug to work today - it's on display in the tearoom with a portfolio of my work, a few knitted items and a vase of knitted daffodils. I'll see how it goes. A few customers admired the stuff today, so far no sales, but if it had all sold straight away I'd worry that I'd priced it too low.

Now I'm about to re-tie the warp and make another rug.

Its lovely seeing someone else who weaves.

I'm self taught (eeek) own an Ashford 24 inch table loom and I have had my third project which is a tapestry (why not? on if for ages.

Any pics of the tapestry or are you waiting until you finish? As you say, why not use an existing loom as the frame for a tapestry.

I've been secretly thinking about a tapestry - I haven't told OH yet, but I know where the embroidery frame is stored, I found it in a drawer the other day while looking for something else, and if Feltmaker can use one for Sprang, then I could use one for tapestry.....

I'm mostly self taught as well - I had a bit of a go at weaving at school but it was such a popular activity that everyone only got 1/2 a term which was just enough to weave a small rug and we didn't do any setting up. Then I didn't touch it for years until OH & I were offered a second-hand folding loom many years ago OH suggested that we buy it because we wouldn't get the chance again. I'm very glad that we did. I wove a few things, then it got folded up when we moved and didn't come back out until this month.
