:blob3: I'm very happy. I've made my own washable pads and love to use them and now my sister has asked me to make some for her and her 2 daughters. I've made them and thought i'd post a photo of them before I send them to her (she lives in Italy) I hope they like them.

Well done Nora, they're excellent, am thinking of making panty liners myself. What do you use to back them with? I have heard that fleece is OK.

I've used flannelette to back them with, then a layer of breathable waterproof fabric. The absorbent part is as many layers as you like of flannelette then top layer is either flannelette or fleece. Flanelette for the top layer is good but can act like a wick and spread fluid outwards, the fleece lets it go straight through to the absorbent layer. Hope this makes sense.

It does! Where did you get the breathable waterproof fabric?

Very impressive Nora, did you find the design somewhere or make them up yourself?

I'm not sure they will be my first project when (or if) I learn to sew but definitely food for thought

Thanks Bugs. I bought myself some at first and then made my own with a few changes (improvements). They are very easy to make and I just used my old singer hand sewing machine, no posh equipment required. If you do decide you want to make some, I would be very happy to tell you how.

(Sorry boys, lucky none of us here are trying to pull )

What do you do with them..afterwards..do they go straight in the washing machine at the end of the day, or do you rinse them out and do a big load on their own?

I don't have a sewing machine at the moment so it really would be some time, but it is very interesting - shouldn't really be any different from discussing babies' nappies, I suppose, but it does feel odd

Right this is what you do afterwards
fold the pad so the used bit is on the inside (i'll post a picture of how to fold them). if you are out, put in a maybe waterproof make up bag. Find a container, nappy bucket, casserole dish with lid, old ice cream tub etc, fill it with cold water and just put the pads in here as youve finished with them. Then just rinse and wash in washing machine with rest of washing each day or every other day (change the soaking water at least every 24 hrs). Dont put conditioner in the wash as it reduced absorbency. Put back into shape when washed and hang out to dry!! I don't have a tumble dryer but think they can go in there on a cool setting. I think thats it. I know it seems embarassing to mention it but once you do it, its OK. You can use the soaking water to water the garden with too.

Thanks very much Nora, I'm really impressed with the way they fold up too, it's a really neat idea. Definitely one to think about.
