Normally I'd never consider picking sweet violets, they're far too lovely where they are. They make great eating, but you have to have your priorities right.

This year, my first inclination that it was going to be a tremendous one for sweet violets was back in mid February where they started blooming on a pavement where I've never seen them before. As the season has progressed, I've seen more sweet violets in more places than I've eved encountered. It's gone from being a common-ish wild flower to being apparently more common than daisies. In Bagpuss's garden yesterday, the smell of sweet violets was amazing.

So this year, we've had just a few sweet violets. Not a lot. And their flavour is even better than the smell.

Anyone else spotted a glut of violets?
