Bit of a 'speed forage' this week. Hit our gooseberry patch (they aren't ready), and the currants, finding our first redcurrants of the year; a full fortnight later than last year, presumably the late frosts did that. If it doesn't rain soon, the wild currant harvest is going to be a complete disaster

Do wild ones tend to be earlier than cultivated ones? All our soft fruits are ages from being ripe, but we should get a good harvest when they are. Just need to keep the hens under control...

Depends on the variety and how exposed they are, but generally yes, the wild ones I find normally seem to be a little further on than the ones in peoples gardens. If they're deep in a hedge they'll be late, if they're on an exposed railway embankment they'll be early. I usually look to find red currants from the start of June onwards, but I've had them well into August.

Thanks Cab, you've just reminded me that there are some wild currant bushes on the common, I shall go and look in the morning.

Also, the lack of rain has meant a total lack of mushrooms round here compared to last year. I've seen nothing since I found the St George's 2 months ago
