Radio 4 Wednesday 11:00 Hard Graft: The Story of a 1930s...
...Workcamp

Richard Daniel tells the story of the creating of England's largest lowland forest - Thetford Forest, on the borders of Norfolk and Suffolk. Entirely man-made, and relatively new, it was planted in the 1920s and 1930s by the fledgling Forestry Commission, which itself had been set up to repair the damage done to homegrown timber production during the First World War.

Hard Graft looks at the forest labour camps to which were sent unemployed workers, especially from the North East of England, an area badly hit by the Depression. But did the camps make a useful contribution to the forest and to easing the problems of the Great Slump, or were they, as their opponents described them, no more than slave camps?
