Just broke my old Acer Aspire one... bounced it on the floor and broke the screen. Well time for an upgrade anyhow. So I need to transfer files to a new PC. Plugged a temp screen in and confirmed the old pc still works. Good so far. Plugged in a new Verbatim 64Gig usb stick. But while I can open individual files and save them on the usb stick, any attempt to use Windows explorer to copy/paste, drag drop or whatever then explorer crashes and restarts. Fault even occurs copy/pasting within the PC. Is this Microsoft's punishment for failing to upgrade to Windows10? Is there a good work around. Last time I swapped PC I used a kit to connect the old hard drive as an external drive to the new PC.... might still have the kit but that was some years ago.

Can you copy from the command line? (Type cmd at Run)

You can then use xcopy to copy files, so let's say you wanted to copy all of C:\Program Files\ to Your USB and the USB was drive letter F: then:

xcopy "C:\Program Files" F: /s /e

The Source (C:\Program Files) is in quotation marks because there's a space between words, it doesn't need them if there's no space.

/s tells xcopy to copy subdirectories as well
/e tells xcopy to copy subdirectories even if they're empty

Although I can't think why windows explorer shouldn't let you copy/paste

Googling around suggests that the Windows explorer problem is not unheard of... but there doesn't seem to be an easy fix. Your copy command should do the job. Thanks.

Following on ... recommendations for a new laptop... say 14"screen, maybe dvd drive. Open office and general internet stuff. And doesn't grind to a halt at the slightest challenge. On my old pc Firefox was renamed as 'Firefox not responding'. Anything any good sub 300 pounds? Dee

I tend to get an Acer from ebuyer - cheap and cheerful for what I need, but I don't do massive games or calculate astrophysics. I'm also slightly limited becase I still need a dvd drive. The one I have now is 4-6 years old and the only issue is it getting a bit warm for my liking when it's "concentrating".

Have you tried running a Linux live cd? Should enable you to copy the files.

That's a bit beyond my pay grade to make that work. If the basic command line stuff doesn't work I'lll probably pay someone else to do it. Thanks

Well after a dose of Flu knocked a month out of my life I returned to the fray. Checked... Windows explorer file manager still crashes. Also found Windows backup non-functional. So checked file paths, used Run option to xcopy and successfully transferred all 22000 files to memory stick and onto new PC. Result!
