Can anybody recommend a (preferably free) piece of software that will check broadband speed (on a Windows 10 PC) and I would like one that stores the records it collects by time and date.

TIA

iirc there is one called think broadband that can do that as well as total up the gigs per month(useful if you have a limit) .

once you have done with it it is a bit of a beast to remove ,disconnect from web, remove it then manually remove the self preserving/reinstall trojan that refuses to let you go

the other downside is that it can be a bit ram hungry at times and might slow down various activities

2/5 even though it has good points

I think that might be overkill. I only want to check speeds now and then, and especially also when I'm at my m-I-l's house.

Don't need to keep an eye on gigs per month, my ISP kindly upgraded me to 'no limit'. (Two weeks after I had increased my monthly payment to get a few more gigs because we had been getting close to my previous limit!)

Ah, but I'm such a tyro at these things that I don't know who the usual suspects are!

This is excellent. But I'm on a phone, and it may be mobile only.

I use speedtest.net as well. IT types get snooty and tell you that the only way to genuinely test speed is to transfer a large file of known size and time it, but I've always found that when the internet is working well, speedtest gives a good result and when it's not working speedtest gives a naff result, which is good enough for me. I'm not aware it logs results, but a spreadsheet would do the same, and allow you to draw purdy graphs.

This is the one I was recommended to use by my ISP when we needed to report problems to OpenReach. https://speedtest.btwholesale.com/

I've not used it for a few years but think it can store results.

The BT Wholesale Broadband Speed Test requires Adobe Flash to run - which is not supported as standard by most browsers. Also, it means that it will not run on mobile devices such as phones & tablets.

There are a number of good speed tests sites such as:-
https://internethealthtest.org/
https://www.broadbandspeedtest.org.uk/
https://speed.measurementlab.net/#/

To get accurate results it is best to run a test several times & possibly at different times of the day.

For those who don't know, packet radio is about squirting computer data across ham radio.
That is not far off all that I know about it, but it has always struck me as being something potentially incredibly useful come the apocalypse, and with the various talk of doomsday preparations, I thought I would raise the subject...
