Chinese seafarers made up a considerable proportion of the merchant navy fleet during the Second World War. Their dead were among the many killed as U-boats torpedoed merchant ships in the Atlantic convoys.

But after the war was over, they were not as welcome in Britain as they had been and hundreds of Shanghai sailors were hurriedly repatriated, many forced to leave behind their British born wives and children.

Ivan Howlett tells the story of those Chinese seafarers from Liverpool, and hears from the children they were forced to leave behind who have spent their lives trying to find out what really happened to their fathers

I spent quite an interesting visit to Ellis Island the old US port of entry for immigrants, where they have a lot of interesting exhibitions.

Some of it was on racism against immigrants, and the amount of anti-chinese racism was quite a revelation

Just further proof that as times change, the need to scape goat one group or another does not change, nor do the accusations much, it is merely the groups targetted that shift every so often

I've heard rumours that Dr seuss was less than universally admired, but I'd recommend The sneetches to anyone that wants to know what racism is.

I still know bugger all about him, aside from coming across that little diatribe. But sometimes things are not all they seem. Uncle Toms Cabin for example you might expect to be racist, but really IMHO is not.
