I will hopefully be moving house at the end of the month or shortly thereafter and have decided to get broadband installed.
Two questions
1) any really good providers out there for unlimited use at a reasonable cost?
2) If i choose a provider other than AOL my current narrowband provider is it a simple(for a technophobe like myself) to still access my email at an aol.com e-mail address.bear in mind i am so technophobe that i cannot set up netscape or the microsoft outlook to work. don't understand pop3 or whatever the other thing is

I think you'll have to change your email address if you stop using AOL. But that's worth doing IMHO. BT are reasonable, or look at the cable suppliers if your area is cabled. Bundling stuff together with the same supplier often gives you a good deal.

We'll hopefully be able to talk you through setting up an email address with Thunderbird or Outlook

No, we'll only be able to talk him through Thunderbird. Lovely Thunderbird. Horrible Outlook.

Someone at work is looking for a broadband supplier, I'll ask him what conclusions he got. Also have a look at the MSE wesbite, they have a comparison article, I think, although I think it will be mainly on price rather than service. Someone here says Nildram are good for service?

https://www.adslguide.org/ is a good guide to different broadband providers so you can make sure you get the best deal

your aol email may have to go depending on how you currently read your mail. If it is downloaded into a program like outlook you maybe okay receiving the email but if you get the mail through some aol proprietary program you are probably stuck

guess who deleted the outlook program when he couldn't get it to work
I have alrerady spoken to AOL to try to learn how to autoforward email from my aol email address to another but alas they cannot set that up.
might go the whole hog and get a laptop to use myself so the kids can carry on using this pc without getting in my way

What is thunderbird, is it a search engine or just a email account provider and does it have any supporters on this site?

what is the minimum spec laptop i would need for running thunderbird or the like and microsoft word and not much more. not made of money and would like some thing that will do the above but not bothered about cd/dvd playing etc.
will have a bit of money left over from the move and would like to spend it wisely rather than paying out for an all singing all dancing top of the range laptop which i will not need or get the benefits from

Also if you new broadband provider doesn't give you email which to be fair is unlikely you may want to consider gmail as an alternative. This is googles webmail service whose accounts are currently only availible by
invite but if you want one pm me with you current email address and I can send you one

The cheapest laptop you can find will run Thunderbird, Word and a browser (Firefox if you're not using it already) adequately. If yu're going to use it for browsing just go for the biggest screen you can afford.
