My hubby's about to start his own business as an electrician. It's exciting but a bit scary, especially at this stage, where all we seem to do is spend out!!

He can start trading as of 1st June, so we're getting everything organised now; van's going to be sign-written tomorrow, got business cards, postcards (going to use them as a leaflet drop) and a t-shirt from Vistaprint (all free apart from the postage ), got his specialist test equipment on order, membership of "competent person scheme" organised so he can sign off his own work, business name registered etc. etc.

I went on his behalf today to a Business Link training day, to learn all about finance and accounting; a useful day all in all.

Good luck with everything.
It is scary at first, but once you get a few jobs under your belt
there's nothing like working for yourself.

Thanks It IS scary at the moment, because all I'm seeing is money going out ... and then some more money going out!

However, we have a HUGE advantage, in that our village shop-keeper is a real local lady (1/4 of the people in the village seem to be related to her in one way or another), and she's very much "in support" of having a really local electrician ... so she's promised to promote him at every opportunity, bless her. That should help ...

Lots of luck with it all. It sounds as though you have good local support, so should do well.

I was quite chuffed today at the Business Link thing; MOH went to last week's session himself, and came back saying one of the women on the course had offered to do his artwork for him if he wanted (she's a graphic designer) ... but I'd spent the day doing it myself (not knowing about this newly-made contact). Everyone was swapping business cards today, so I handed out some of his ... the the graphic designer said "wow, that's brilliant, I couldn't have done better than that" Did make me feel good

I've used the tag-line of "a local electrician for local people" ... and the t-shirt has the logo with "Chris, your LOCAL Electrician" underneath. Looks really good, even if I do say so myself

I hope it all goes well for you. Sounds as though you have a flying start with the local angle. Electrics are one of the things we can't do without and few of us have any idea of so he should do well.
