Clearing away the finished poppies and forget-me-nots at home, I came across a couple of dozen shoots of wheat! The source is most likely the bird-feeder stuck in the middle of the bed, I guess the birds have dropped the seed and where it's been protected by other plants it's germinated and come up really well.

Made me think though - I spend hours mollycoddling all sorts of plants to harvest, and yet these had been completely ignored but still looked incredibly healthy*

Cheers,
Rob.

* as do the dahlia's that I left in all winter and even forgot to mulch. They've survived weeks of frost, several inches of snow and the waterlogging that follwed the thaw - I thought they were supposed to be tender things that popped their clogs if winter was harsh?!

We have tomatoes coming up in the window boxes and hanging baskets where we thought all we had were strawberries

Last time I saw tomatoes going 'wild' was a massive crop we had when a septic tank overflowed. We were managing a holiday centre at the time and had to clear them fast as we had a health and safety inspector coming. We got about 40lbs of tomatoes from them, stripped the plants out fast and fixed the leak.

I've got loads of squash plants growing among the tomatoes in the greenhouse. There must have been unrotted seeds in my compost!

A tomato plant grew in the moss in the alley at the back of our Manchester store last summer, presumably the progeny of dropped sandwich!

Do you still get hemp seed in bird food...

We always get some rogue wheat growing from the stuff the hens have missed; then then enjoy eating the heads just as they ripen. This year I found several stashes of sprouting wheat where mice have taken it and stored it, just noticed some is forming heads in the flower beds.

I find little parsley plants that must be from previous years' sowings, newly germinating.

Otherwise it's the usual 'unexpected' crop of weeds and rogue tatties.

I always notice tomato plants growing between the rail tracks (I commute by rail each day, so notice these things when waiting for the trains to come).

I guess tomato is a popular ingredient in sandwiches served on the trains:)
