Fond my first St George's mushrooms yesterday. They were still very small but never seen them quite this early before.

This year (so far) St George's have been the only thing I've seen that's been early. In fact the 24th March is a record for me. In all the years I've been foraging the previous early date was the 26th March. Last year the same patch didn't do anything until the end of April, which is average for these mushrooms.

I am also surprised to see them considering how little rain we've had. This March is on course for being one of the driest on record.

St George's mushrooms saved from the mower!!!

Sadly not picked on St George's Day. These were picked an the 7th April - I've never seen so many this early. In fact they were all gathered from one spot. This was from the grounds of a local baptist church, all in the middle of town and of course I got permission. I've been picking here for years and the people there know me and always seem interested in what I do. Got there just in time too - as I picked the last few the gardeners came to cut the lawn!

After I got these I kept seeing St George's all over the place - in parks, peoples gardens, out in the New Forest, on verges. It's been a good (if rather early and short) season for them which is odd given how little rain we've had and how warm it's been.

Are they still about now, or has the heat/dryness brought a premature end to the season?

I've been out in the New Forest quite a bit over the last few days and not seen any (although I haven't been actively searching, I've had an eye open).

I did see an adder sunbathing earlier today though.

hummm i found 2 rather dry ones with squirrel teeth mark not good enough for them but ok with bacon we need rain here for shrooming

I went to check on my St Georges spot and there is no sign of them. In fact, it's so dry that even the moss on the bank where they grow has dried up and gone brown. I'm getting quite concerned about the lack of rain!
