I used to use one for lambing and now use it for the office. I haven't done anything with it, just have a calor gas fire that is used on the rare occasions I'm in there for any length of time and must admit, it was blooming chilly in February. I'd be inclined to stack bales round it and then sheet it over, quick and easy and cheap. Alternatively, I'm currently cladding my mobile home with timber and using that celotex rigid insulation. So I've stuck in a load of metposts close to the external walls, built a frame, wedged the insulation in and clad over the top. The metposts take the weight of the roof and cladding and the mobile home is insulated without any weight burden being placed on it, essential given that these things are really quite lightweight themselves.
I'd post a picture but no idea where the camera is at the moment. If I were going to construct a bedroom for one of mine I think I'd probably just knock something together with bales. Portacabins are ok but 8' isn't all that wide. A load bearing straw bale building could be a much more usable space, some reclaimed windows and an old door, soon have it up ready! Plus you can use it as bedding etc when they move out.
However, should reason prevail, I would suggest wall to wall bookcases and a wood burner would do or see if you can find a caravan. My daughter has an 18' caravan with a burner up here, she loves it. If you find one that's getting on a bit, it might be cheaper and less hassle than kitting out the portacabin. Plus, with having a cooker it gives a bit of autonomy. We're going to build a tree bog and fence a bit of garden off so that she's completely self contained.
Well, I've rambled on at you, not sure any of this is any help whatsoever but I mean well |
