Hi
I wear a LED headtorch when rounding up the geese at night and a couple of nights ago accidently switched it from the normal white light to the red LED. This caused mass panick with the geese and as soon I switched it back to white light, order was restored.

I've tried this a couple of times to see if it was a coincidence and it always results in panic!

Has anyone else noticed this behaviour?

Simon

Might just be something unusual - maybe if you always used on red and accidently switched to white you'd get the same response.

I don't know about geese, but we have to rear turkeys with red light, and chickens with white, otherwise they cause too much pecking damage to each other.

But in the wild would you ever get a bright enough light in the dark to reflect and show up the colour of the tapetum lucidum? (which in any case is yellow in dogs and presumambly foxes.)

(We only see "red eye" on human flash photos because we don't have one)

canines range from yellow ,blue ,red and other
foxes ,even in moonlight, shine if the angle is right ,red fox red eyes afaik. looking through a greenscreen they are the brightest thing in the world

geese have good eyesight, big red shine may well worry them

do they react in daylight ?

I haven't tried that - but will have a go this weekend - wife does the morning shift!!

Cocker spaniel have amber eyes and doberman's have blue eyes in torch light.
