As per suggestions I have made some of these this morning. See what you lot think. These are the first ones I have done so any 'constructive' comments welcome. Shawl pins:- Hair pins. The hair pins and round bits in the shawl pins are walnut, the shawl pin pins are oak. Pete

They do look grand.

What length are the hair sticks ?
The one I'm using at the moment is 6", and not decorated, so all usable length. There's only about an inch sticking out of each side of my bun, so I think that's a good length for my hair.

I know some folk use shorter ones.. (maybe 4"??).

ETA : I have also seen hairsticks with a slight curve in the length, but never tried using them. Hairforks definitely have a curve in their length, so they curve round the head.

Thank you ladies,
I did a quick search to see what sort of length the hair sticks are usually and between 5" and 8" seemed to be the norm so these are 7" and 6.5" long. I am going to do some plain ones and Mo will put some lamp work or semi precious dangly bits on them, Japanese style see how long that takes. Just need to do a few more and see how long they take to work out a sensible price.

Any idea how much for a plain wooden one with just a turned end, Pete ?
I'm not really into decoration.

Does anyone else here on DS regularly use hairsticks ?
If so, how pointy is the end of yours ? Is it smoothly tapering and rounded at the end like these ? Or pointier ? What kind of hair have you got : smooth and straight, or curly, fine or coarse ?

Asking because my hairstick is a broken wooden chopstick with the narrower end sharpened in a pencil sharpener, and blunted down with sandpaper. So it is quite pointy, and I find that useful for getting it through my wavy, coarse, thick hair.

They look great. The left hand shawl pin, is the hole supposed to be off centre (could be just the picture). It looks like it's slightly off centre, perhaps by mistake rather than design; does that matter, aesthetically? The right hand one is clearly meant to be off centre, and looks fab.

I love hair sticks but keep loosing them. I have had several made by Sally's Gareth from bone. They were fab, my favourite one had a twist all the way along it so I was able to skew it into my hair. I sat on that one and snapped it I would be very interested in a wooden one.

I was just thinking about a twisted stem for the stick, sort of spirally. But how easy is it to smooth/polish the surfaces of such a stick ? My hairstick slides out easily - which is good in one way, because it doesn't catch on or rip at my hair. Hmm. Smooth hairstick that avoids abrading the hair vs rougher texture and shape that stays in the bun ???? Trade-offs here.

They are both turned so that the hole is off centre. I experimented how far off centre to go, what looks best and what is practical.

I was thinking in the region of £6.95 for the hair sticks. P+P is free for friends, and forum members etc. I am going back into the sweatshop (I wish) in a moment so I will make some fairly plain ones as well. I want to try and make them so they are all a bit different anyway. I will see what wood I have as well.

Okeedokee. A few more of these. Two beech hair sticks, one walnut, two laburnum shawl pins, one with an ash pin one with a tulip wood pin. The grain doesn't show in the laburnum so here's a close up. Still not showing as well as I'd like Comments critique etc welcome as always. Pete

The one in your image looks round? Aren't they usually flat? I could make one but whether I could do it for a decent price don't know. Worth a go as it isn't something I have in my shop. Pete
