Nuke it from space.

Sounds like this machine is totally compromised - it will be quicker and easier to reinstall from scratch.

Boot from your ubuntu stick and backup the data files he needs, then nuke it.

I've considered the option of an ubuntu install. be a good learning exercise for him. but in practical terms the machine is of far more use with MS office installed. which means fixing the current install. at the very least enough to get the XP key. whatever open office may claim, it isn't compatable.

actualy, i'm sure someone told me ages ago vista keys work with xp. I do have the documentation of my last machine that was vista. prob have the key with that. it's just a damn nuisance the disks i had from when i was running xp are defunct

check out Libre Office 4, see if it meets the bill.

or Apache Open Office

The little sweetie can do you, his classmates and the rest of us a big favour by doing a compare and contrast with MS Office.

i know libreoffice has the same issues.

they are absolutely fine for simple text, but do anything more complex than that and the formatting all goes to hell.

allegedly, you can install MS Office in Ubuntu using "WINE":

suspect that it might rival sweet little boys for sheer frustration, but surely a little more productive than lurking round here
