Went a bit further than an olive branch last year: bought the daughters' mother an olive tree...
It spent winter in a small pot on the doorstep, but it is not quite dead yet...

Anyone know any Lazarus tricks?

Mine stays in the greenhouse for the winter, but still got frosted year before last.

Some feed & a bit of tlc usually prompts fresh growth, just keep pinching the tips out at 2 or 3 pairs of leaves & it will grow nice & bushy.

Ran mine over with the mower, several years back....now 8 feet tall

they can normally withstand -12°, but need wrapping in winter & are better in soil than in a pot....

that's all I know, for what it's worth

I've got little 2 olives this year on my smaller (8 ins high) bush that lives in a pot in the conservatory. Its bigger brother (sister?) is 3 ft high and as yet to offer up anything (size isn't everything).
I'll plant it in the polytunnel next to the fig - so they can bitch about the crap weather and keep each other company.

Global warming is not going to help here.

Or if it has to be in a pot, then at least make it a big one... like, for example the one it was stood on.

What do they eat? Comfrey soup perhaps?
And what sort of tlc? Bed rest and gentle music?

One of the funniest things was seeing sons FIL trying to put a fleece jacket on their potted olive. Think on the whole the fleece won.

It got frosted for all that, but think it sprouted from the base. They have it in a nice warm sheltered place by the house now. Havn't heard they have got any olives from it though.
