Is it possible to freeze French or runners without first blanching?

They will freeze but will not last too long. Blanching stops enzymes from making veg go bad.

Thanks. That's pretty much what I'd thought. How long would you reckon?

About a month for beans at a guess, longer for peas though.

Thanks. I'm not too keen on frozen as they tend lose taste and bite and I've never liked them chutneyed, so I've taken to giving the excess to neighbours.

I stopped blanching before freezing several years ago - it really didn't seem to make any difference as to how long something lasted or how the taste was preserved.

Always the option of salting them down. I never freeze beans, it ruins them in my book, would rather have them loads of times in season to get the best out of them. Runner bean wine can be good though

I always blanch them - very briefly, and I thnk it makes a big difference - they are never as nice as fresh, but still pretty good.

I gave up blanching years ago when we had a massive glut. Haven't really noticed the difference.

Thanks to all. I'll give unblanched a try.
