Is it any use at all without a sky subscription? I was told it could be used for freeview, but it just sits, apparently looking for a Sky signal.

I think you can and may have to, buy a one off thing to make it freeview.

I think you have to get a Freesat card for the viewing card slot. Which is probably more expensive than just getting a cheap Freeview box.

Possibly, but it should be a bit better than a cheap freeview box: it does have a hard drive.

Dunno, my knowledge of this is sketchy at best and dates back to before the analogue signal was switched off. Plug it in and find out - after all, what's the worst that can happen?

We cancelled our sky subscription and all the free channels continued to work after the cut off period. Didn't get a new card, and the pause and record functionality were disabled. We have sky back now because they offered us the full package for a fiver a month.
