Do I need one? Our current TV has has done a fine Black Night impersonation but has finally died. The good news is we get a free replacement under warranty as it's too damaged to repair.

Now the prices have come down since we bought it and we can get a bigger Smart TV but is it worth it or is it just going to be more of a pain and go wrong?

To be honest I've not really missed the TV since it gave up a few weeks ago but part of the appeal of a smart TV is sending stuff to it via iPlayer.

I. Certainly watching more and more stuff when I want, not because it's on. I do this mostly by sky, but the smart TVs allow you to do it direct.

It's a matter of convenience and dosh. The smartest TV is outshone by the dumbest laptop, so if your new TV has an HDMI input, and your laptop is vaguely modern, go with that. On the other hand, if you don't want dangling wires and like the idea of life with just one remote to rule them all, go for a smart TV

You can beam iplayer etc (and anything on your computer's hard drive) to any TV with a hdmi socket, via wifi, with a £30 chromecast if that affects your choices at all.

I think I disagree, dpack.

It's a TV, for viewing things. A smart TV basically allows for an Internet and hard drive connection, so you can then access iplayer, Youtube, movies and things like Netflix instantly. It does this at least as well as a PC without extra wires, power consumption and having a laptop sat in front of it.

It'll only be out of date when those services change, or new ones come along requiring something more. Given the expected life of a TV now is probably only a few short years, I doubt this is much different than a laptop. I know you can, theoretically, update a PC, but people don't.

Having the Smart option keeps things simple for most people.

Wot Nick said.
Why faff about connecting the laptop to the TV when you can just press a button?
Pausing live TV is useful too.

one of my monitors has a free view box thing and a dvd player that is ok for what is pushed at me but there is a wire that can link it to a lappy or tower if i want big bright picture for utube, independent stuff etc .

the steampunk server has the sound card and 5.1 rig connected to it which is ace for tunes or radio but it can be tasked for vision as well

television can be changed if you want to chose rather than to be told

Nonsense. 95% of TV is repeats anyway. What doesn't your TV do?
