It doesn't get much more natural & it's still practised in the forests of Eastern Europe. But I haven't a head for heights, or any suitable trees.

I do think that it would be far less work to attach a box of similar size to a tree rather than all that work.
The only advantage I can see is it's less obvious to those that might rob the colony.
If the trees are on your own land or land without public access I think I'd rather leave the tree be.
But it does raise the point with so many old hollow trees being felled for safety reasons there are far fewer natural sites for bees, bats & birds.
Even if you don't want to keep bees, providing a home for colonisation naturally will help provide swarms & drones to help those that do, aid pollination & increase the local gene pool.
