Possibly substitute feeling the soil with your hand. If it feels cold, then the plants might find it a bit chilly too. It will feel cool, especially if it is damp, but shouldn't feel cold. I tend to go by time of year, weather and weather forecast for a week or so ahead and hope for the best. We have been here for a long time, so know more or less when the last frosts are likely, but very cold winds are another matter.

I think, for now, my allotment is finally finished. Can't see where I can squeeze anything else in. I have made a small wildflower bed but the California poppies seem to have taken over.

very nice, easy to use and you do more weeding than me lots of hard work but a tidy lottie is rather nice, mine was more random

Thanks all. I have to say, the second lockdown helped a lot with getting it up to speed. I just hope now I'm back at work fulltime I'll be able to keep it looking so. DPack. Weeds make it look untidy, so I need to keep on top of them.

getting rid of most by this stage and only needing to hoe off when cultivating is rather diligent

some things i am ruthless with a hoe or whatever, others tend to swamp the weeds

at the mo my bramble bed is almost all things most folk would call weeds, most are useful to human or wildlife but not veg or flowers

it is sort of becoming a cornish bank, i need more rocks or old bricks and the inclination to do a day or two of drystoning
having started as a sterile hole of dead soil, in concrete and dark as hades it is now a couple of feet deep with very nice soil from used fish box grows etc, the birds feed it guano and seeds

the rate of increase of plant/critter species in it is at least a factor of ten bigger than that used for dating old hedges and banks

tis worm city as well as having a decent blackberry crop and a bath house for the birds

We have a nettle invasion, warm wet weather means they go rampant and we get lazy. Was planning a counter attack today, but again it's wet and depressing.
