When the peregrine is round here the birds fly low and hide. Haven't seen it for this year, and the rooks are back in the pylon, so it may have moved on.

they seem to have calmed down, perhaps it works a bit like some Graves' greek myth stuff.
a regular sacrifice to the "monster" but there is plenty of food etc.

considering afaik there are a few casualties a year it is probably safer than the last water hole in africa or being a baby trout

i need to do some research, i want to know what the bit between beak and face on a pigeon is called

as in "one of the rough townies has a very fine and splendidly white ???????"

the gopher in eagle shadow won*, it resisted and dived down a burrow

* the original is snake etc, a very fine low budget movie that actually demonstrates some ace training methods, as recommended to me by sifu ray wu
the plot is fairly standard but better than most, the kick ass stuff is spot on.
and a chance to improve your Cantonese as well as your styles

anyway back to widlife, the early bird was a skinny, damp clarice, i saw it a couple of days back and it seemed to know me so i reckon it is one who visited last year, it looks like it had a hard winter

on a perhaps more serious moment, it seems to have been a dismal year for overground invertebrates

i have no idea why, it may be weather or it may be other factors

that has an up the food chain effect as well

I can report that the midges, mosquitoes and ticks in the woods and the slugs and snails in the garden seem to have survived without any difficulty. We did have warm dry weather here early, followed by cool, wet weather. May have had an effect.

there was one white tail bee yesterday

aphids are rare, almost no flying insects

a noticeable set of population crashes compared to last year across many species

late or missing will become clearer

the springwatch contributors on telly seemed to be minded to at least a month behind last year, a bit mixed up and very few invertebrates

Birdtown may need extra subsidies this year in that case

Hopefully things will just be a little late. Quite a few insects out and about yesterday and the swifts were doing the rounds in the sky last night and their eyesight is better than mine.

Flora wise things here are at least a fortnight late and very mixed. We still have a few primroses and violets, but also late spring flowers like red campion, and the ox eye daisies in the lawn will be in flower soon. Have seen butterflies, but none very lately as too cold and wet.
