What I don't understand about this kind of problem is why they don't make it easier to get the relevant information out of the meter.
Unless they do, and the people I have spoken to haven't tried very hard.

If there's a digital output of the amount of power being generated and how much is being used, then it should be fairly straightforward to have an electronic control system to turn the heat up (or whatever) when there is surplus power generation.

It should be easy, and supplied as standard, but apparently it isn't.

I think there are some efforts to get the appliances to talk to the PV panels. I imagine there's more than these though
