I have an electrolumenesence question......

I have recently purchased a head torch with separate battery pack.

The bulb (a halogen 5w 6v G4)

Now here's the question, I would like to get a bit more light out of it....if I had a 20w 12v G4 halogen bulb, would this give work like a 10w 6v???? Or (more likely) will it not work at all!

Can you guess what I want it for???? (Clue in the Subject)

Err, you want to stare at it until your previously 'bright eyes' start to see nothing but green splodges?? Be careful, you'll trip over all the bunnies if you do that

What do the instructions say? Drawing more current out of the battery may cause the wires to overheat and using a 20W bulb where only a 5W bulb should be would give off more heat and could melt the thing. The battery would also last for far less time.

Instructions are vague to say the least.

However, I got it from Maplin's, and it is exactly the same as one by Tracer (a reputable maker of gun lights and head lamps.)

I'm sure the do a 12v version.

I was thinking that it would only put out 20w if I ran it at 12v.
So if I run it at 6v would it put out 10w?
Still a good increase on 5w, but not into car headlamp territory!!
Obviously I'm expecting battery life to be halved. But that could be acceptable for the extra light.
Plus if that set up works, I will probably go for a lead acid battery, rather than the 4d cells.
Of course I could go for a 12v battery, but then weight weight weight. I need to be able to carry what I find!

Should be OK if he shaves his head first and places a damp sponge under his cap before switching on.

...and our old friend Ivy Watts, IxV=W. But the bulb should say what the W and V requiremnts are and I would expect the torch head only to be able to cope with a certain amount of heat from the bulb.

Have you tried asking Maplins?

No I haven't, I think the model I purchased is underbulbed (a word you don't hear every day!)

The same design is also sold with a 12 v system and a higher wattage bulb, can't see why they would produce two different models that looked the same, but used completely diffent parts.

So I'm thinking I have the Mk1 Escort 1100, and am turning it into a Bubble arched RS1600

IIRC Power = V2/R, therefore for a given resistance if you halve the voltage you get a quarter the power or in this case you are back to 5W, though this doesnt take into account the internal resistance of the battery.
