Adding your own bergamot to tea

Is it safe to add a drop of bergamot oil to a cup of tea? I've made the mistake of buying tesco finest earl grey and it's apparent it's never been anywhere near any bergamot. I was wondering about adding a dot of my own.

Personally I would not however this might help:

We bought some recently that tastes bland and also never seen bergamot - we add a sprig of mint or a lemon or lime slice to 'spice' it up a bit.

Will only now buy loose tea and bit extra for quality - worth it in the long run.

I certainly won't make that mistake again (that's twice now Embarassed ) The Twinings was a quid more but it didn't occur to me at the time that the tea lasts me a month so a quid is a trfling piffle. I'm stuck with it for the time being Rolling Eyes

Bergamot is considered non-toxic orally if used regularly - it has an oral toxicity of greater than 5g/kg of body weight - i.e. you'd have to guzzle a rather large bottle to kill yourself.

Adding a drop of bergamot (preferably pre-diluted in whole-fat milk) won't do you any harm, though you might find it too strong. How about putting a few drops on some cotton wool in the tea caddy instead.

That's a very good idea, clara. Thank you Smile

I would second Clara's advice, this way you can take out the cotton wool or watever once the tea has picked up enough additional scent, and you are less likely to overdo it and end up with something you don't like Very Happy
