Apple Variety...Windsor Early

Anyone here growing these? A cracking apple, nice colour, just right on juiciness, acidity, taste....bought a pack in morisons...
gregotyn

No, but as a semi-Morrisons' shopper I will put them to the test. Currently I do Royal Gala, bit sweet but ok for taste and crunch.

Have been buying them for husband who likes a crisp, slightly sharper apple. The English Coxes have just come in here though, so will probably stick to them now as husband and son both like them. We have some of our own too; Sunset.

There are several good nurseries where you may be able to buy trees. Blackmore is one and there is one on the Isle of Wight who's name currently escapes me.

I have Alkemene and Red Windsor; I'm not sure if Early Windsor is different but these two are very alike. It / they are really good apples, Red Windsor has the longest flowering period of any of my varieties and the fruit stays on the tree for ages, and holds its aromatic flavour throughout. It's my favourite 'eat under the tree' breakfast apple this month.

I have a lot of Cox and Queen Cox trees which won't be ripe for two or three weeks yet, at least. I'd buy them from a farm shop rather than a supermarket to get the richness of flavour that is their strength, that needs tree-ripening to develop fully.

We are fortunate that we have several good orchards in this area so I can buy apples from the earliest ripening right through. Think we started with Discovery and the Coxes have been in for a week or two now, going through Early Windsor and various other ones. With any luck we will now have English apples until about April with the newer storage facilities.

I looked for the Early Windsor at my Morrissons today but not in sight. Is the nursery at Blackmore in Somerset, MR?
Mistress Rose

No, either Surrey or Hampshire. Not sure quite what the border does there. It is north of Petersfield which is in Hampshire, but Hampshire, Surrey and West Sussex get a bit complicated at that point.

I have just found Early Windsor and will be taste/testing tonight! Found in Morrisons today.

Blackmoor is in Hampshire - drove past it twice today - down to Portsmouth for lunch; school Harvest Festival and collected 7y/o GGS for weekend; drove home - will do the return trip on Sunday

Bit of a grey day but enlivened on the journey back by the constant flow of questions from GGS and snatches of songs from the Harvest Festival !!
Mistress Rose

Thanks Rowanlady. As I say, I am never too sure where the border is round there, as the road seems to wiggle over it into 3 counties at odd times. You may have been across the border on your journey, depending on which way you came, but the county signs aren't always there.

I have found Early Windsor apple They too hard for my teeth-I must be due for a false set by now-but very good taste wise.

It is a Cox cross, so will be firm..and as you say a good tasting apple.
I don't eat supermarket shop fruit straight after buying..I reckon it needs a bit more ripening!
gregotyn

That explains it-I should have kept them a week!
Mistress Rose

It depends on the variety and how you like to eat it, but I usually keep russets for quite a while as I prefer them slightly softer. Husband likes his apple slightly underripe if anything, and son prefers his ripe, so get used in most suitable state for various family members.

Just fighting the dogs for the last unpicked Red Windsors for breakfast. Red Alkemene is still hanging on and will be good to eat for a week or so. Windsor is such a convenient variety, tasting good from August to November
gregotyn

Clearly where I have gone wrong, gz-I have dived it for the test!
