Book printing softwareDoes anyone know of a publisher programme that will allow me to print of a couple of shortish stories in book format, that is printing on both sides of the paper with respectice right and left margins and page numbering?
Thanks

You can set Word up to do such things, but for printing on both sides you'll have to have a compatable printer - no way even the best software in the world can do that on a normal printer.

I think that is a 'booklet format' that is stapled down one side and not a 'book' format stapled in the middle, though I could be wrong.

The problem is I want to bind a few copies and need larger r/h margins on l/h pages and vice versa. Also, the book is still being written and I need to 'see' what it looks like as it goes alond. I don't think word can do this.

No, I need the stapled in the middle one.

Not sure, but try File - Page Set-Up. Half way down on Margins is "Multiple Pages" with a drop down next to it - try "Mirror Margins".

Yep!
That certainly does it for the margins -thanks a lot.
Now then.... I want to print it onto two pages per a4 sheet and to be folded like a book. So the first sheet may have page 1,2, 60 and 61 on it ( for example) any idea if woird can sort this out automatically?
Thanks again

You might have to engage the wet-ware and put in the pages you want to print in the order you need (1, 2, last-1, last, 3, 4, last-3, last-2, etc) although I don't know if that'll work.

Have a look at this site http://www.software-partners.co.uk
The fine print software might do the trick. I think you can download a trial version.

Not Word.
The facility is called "imposition". Printers need it every single day.
IIRC, SallyinWales posted some links to PC software a while back.
I can't go looking now. Later.

I use Fineprint, there is a shareware version but it prints a littl ebit of text at the base of the page, so I shelled out the roughly £15 for the full version and use it all the time for our booklets. Its also very handy when printing ordinary things to read, as you can fit loads of pages onto one sheet if you so want.
Highly recommended bit of software, you just print to it rather than your printer (sits in the same file) and it sorts out the rest.

Saved me the trouble sally!
BTW, for Mac's I'd recommend "Cheap Imposter" which operates with any PDF files - even those you can print from every OS X application.
It allows multiple signatures (bundles for stapling within the same book - there's a limit to what a stapler can do y'know) and mucking about with margins...
http://www.cheapimpostor.com/
where they even compare it with similar Mac products.
There are other products that will allow you to futz around with PDFs, like inserting pages. Generally a PDF-based workflow is a pretty good idea - and imagesetters/platemakers will love you when it comes time to print for real. (Otherwise, to keep those folks cheap, keep it really simple and let them do the final layout.)

Dredging up an old thread.
I've just got a new (well... well-used actually) laser.
Ex-corporate lease, eBay, cheap. A new "compatible" cartridge and its right as rain.
Its an HP Laserjet 2300DN.
Which has double-sided printing ability - a 'duplexer'.
Now, here's the good bit.
It does booklet printing all by itself.
BUT, what I don't know is whether this is being done by the printer stuff or by *Macintosh* OS X (I've now got 10.4.8 running - I'm up to date!)
The "print booklet" option isn't documented in any HP materials I've seen, although that panel/pane of the print dialog has a big HP logo.
Its certainly not advertised.
However, as one would expect with a Mac, "it just works".
Design A4 (portrait) pages, in any program.
In the Print dialog set the following options:
- Layout:Two sided printing:Long edge binding
- Finishing:Booklet Printing:Format output as a booklet & Left edge binding & Scale:Proportionally & Paper for booklet:A4(small) {to leave a binding margin}
Click "Print" and it delivers an A5 (half A4) portrait booklet, with all the pages having the proper stuff on both halves, both sides.
Fold the pile in half and staple, that's all you've got to do.
The nifty little printer was £50 +delivery +vat. That's inc duplex and 10/100 networking.
Driver and manuals are free downloads from HP
The toner was £30 delivered. (Should be good for 6,000 sides)
And I splashed out another £13 inc postage when I spotted a big RAM upgrade for it on eBay.
Something like this could be a bargain for anyone thinking of printing booklets (though I don't know whether the Windows driver has the fully automagic booklet capability).
And recycled, too. (But I'm not selling this one!)
BTW I gather that the predecessor model, the 2200, which is a bit slower, is thought to be more durable. And don't believe advertised page counts on any of these things, they are rather easily reset to zero...
