Comfrey

OH got hit by a car on his way back from Asda. He's ok but his elbow was very badly scraped and his kneww is very swollen. I picked loads of comfrey on the way home and made him a hot poultice with it as well as put most of a whole plant (blended up with some water) into a very hot bath along with some silverweed to help his healing. (It was pretty dark by the time we got home or I'd have added some plantain to the mix too). I must say that I am very very impressed with the healing powers of comfrey. His elbow has already started knitting itself up and looks soooooo much better than it did when I brought him home just 3 hours ago. I would highly recommend this herb to anyone. We are also lucky enough to have English comfrey as opposed to Russian comfrey growing near our house which means it's edible too! Smile

Me too.

I've never used comfrey for wounds myself, but I've heard that it's very effective.

in 2007 I came back from Greece with a very achie left knee[meniscus];went to my GP who gave me a 6-7 week appoin. with a specialist at hospital ;I protested that this was no good to me as Im in pain when I walk but apparently there were others worse in front of me!!!I went and got some white comfrey made poultices twice a day for about 1-1 and a half hours and miraculasly in a week I was totally cured and after a few days I could walk 10+ miles and have been 100% ever since.I was already well when I turned up for the specialist, the X-rays were ok and I was sent home.Comfrey does work.

Misdemeanor is doing much better now. He's limping around a bit but his elbow has almost completely healed up. We figured that he should probably cover it while sleeping as it was still bleeding a bit. So I heated up a poultice sandwiched in a clean hankie and wrapped it up with bandages. The wound has healed up apart from the one bit where it was really deep and is now oozing lymph when he bends his elbow. Later in the day I'll make him another poultice with comfrey, plantain, herb robert and oak. According to my book though the poultice should be renewed at least four times a day. Confused

Minamoo, sorry to hear about your OH, glad he's on the mend.

As for comfrey... I've currently got a frozen shoulder, which is quite literally an absolute pain. I've been prescribed heavy-duty anti-inflammatories and have had a steroid injection. Neither of these have worked, and all the injection did was make my shoulder ache more! I started looking online at alternative remedies and read about the wonders of comfrey. In the past I've been sceptical about herbal remedies but out of desperation I bought a jar of comfrey cream. I can honestly say that so far, it's the only thing I've tried which gives me any kind of relief at all - it's incredible!! Within minutes of applying it there's a huge reduction in pain, and this lasts for several hours.

Am now eyeing my allotment heighbours huge comfrey patch with envy...

Cheers,
Rob.

Yep, I've successfully used comfrey, together with slippery elm powder, in a poultice for post-operative knee pain and swelling.

Glad things are on the mend. Would you care to share how you made and applied the poultice?

The version I made was equal parts of slippery elm powder and dried comfrey leaf [from Neals Yard herbalist's shop], mixed to a paste - not too runny or it is very messy - in a bowl with boiling water. Let it cool down to warm [otherwise you'll scald the skin] Then take some muslin folded over to make a sort of layered bag, with the herbal paste smeared/spooned into it, apply to area, and use more muslin or a bandage to hold it in place.

I applied this overnight, so towels in the bed kept the sheets clean, just in case it slipped. Also on the person when they were bedridden / resting during the day, for 2-3 hours.

Have to agree Comfrey is wonderful stuff my OH was a complete sceptic, but after using it once he happily uses it now

If one of our horses are having problems with strain injuries we boil up comfrey leaves until it looks like cooked spinach and then mix that with e45 cream and potters clay reduced to a slip like consistency (we usually have some around as I potter sometimes).

It works a treat.

Yes, I believe it's also known as "knit-bone". Well worth growing for lots of reasons. I hope your OH is more comfortable by now.

It's growing like mad anywhere it can find space among the veggies in our garden now, never used it in this way though, very interesting!
