Courses in low-impact natural building

For anyone thinking of building their own low-impact natural home http://www.naturalhomes.org has probably got the best collection of courses listed for strawbale, cob, earthbag building etc. The course pages are here: http://naturalhomes.org/learning.htm.

It also has a map of homes with links to the owner's websites here http://naturalhomes.org/naturalhomesmap.htm and some short articles from owner-builders here: http://naturalhomes.org/house.htm

Welcome on board Oliver, how did you find us?

Hi, I was looking for information on strawbale building in ask.com and a post from amazonails turned up here. Nice to meet you.

Likewise, looking at your site you do stuff all over the place, how's that work, is it a community of people or do you travel?

We've got a fair few French members, and I'm sure one of them was considering a straw bale build. I'll track him down.

Kind of a community... I work (or will work) with www.earthhandsandhouses.org. I'm trying to get my 3 kids (19, 23 and 25) to buy land and build natural rather than get a big mortgage and an expensive UK house.

Sounds cool, whereabouts are you/they looking at? And how sustainable are you looking at? Self sufficient? And are you an AECB member?

Poland, in the north near Olsztyn. Yes, the homes will be sustainable but I'm not sure what method yet. I helped to build this house which is earthbag and strawbale with clay render and floor and a green roof. Including the 2 acres of land it cost 11,000.

Bugger me that's cheap! I know quite a lot of Polish people, they all seem pretty decent, sounds like a good place to live.
ecoOliver

Cheap... yes. So you understand that people (including me) who work and save in the UK, can go to places like Poland to build a home (and downsize).

Oh, "And are you an AECB member?" - No, and I don't think I would want to be although I'm sure it's a good organisation. I just want to enable, encourage, the new generation of home owners to build their own home rather than work silly hours to pay silly house prices.

I like downsizer... living a non-consumer lifestyle is just what I want for me and my kids.

It's an excellent aim, the thing here is that we have a diversity of views on how that can/should be done, we're not dogmatic. It'd be great to stay updated with your Poland project, I'm sure loads of us would be interested.

Deal...

Excellent.
