Does anyone know how to repair a crack in a metal drain pipeThe pipe takes the water from the bath, bathroom sink and an upstairs bedroom sink. It is cracked only a centimetre or so up from where it enters the drain on the drive way. Is there a way to repair it?
We filled up the sink and watched what happens - much of it ran right up to the wall and disappeared, presumably underneath the house. It might account for some of the damp in the adjacent room.

Depending on how big the area is to repair, I would rcommend JB Weld. This is a two pack epoxy adhesive for metal repairs. Used to be available in Halfords or any good motor factors.

Seconded, good stuff.

OK, I've just carefully removed the Tarmac round the drain and can now see what's going on a bit better (the tarmac was laid far too high, I think). The concrete seal(?) where the pipe join the drain is incomplete / half broken off and there is hole in the pipe just before it touches ground level and the water seems to come through this. (I tried to upload a video but hasn't worked). At least half the water that seeps out the hole runs back towards the house and away, somewhere underneath.
It clearly does need repairing, but is a good 10 feet off where the damp patches are appearing in the breakfast room floor and wall (Really hoped we'd found the problem, but it appears not )
Would the JB weld stuff be suitable for this hole?

Chisel away the remaining cement to see the extent of hole. If it's small enough JBWeld then re-cement.

Brilliant - thanks

It looks like cast iron, be careful not to hit it or it may fracture.

Is the drain blocked ?
You shouldn't get much water come out of a hole in the side of a downpipe - unless the drain is blocked and the water is backing up the pipe.
The cement seal around the base of the pipe is more to keep stuff from entering the drain than to keep the water in - again water shouldn't leak here unless drain is backing up.

I don't think it is blocked - we only had them checked less than a month ago. They do seem on the slow side.. I get the feeling it's literally running out as it comes down. I'm no expert though.

I`d go with Onemanband,a 3in downpipe falling vertical into a 4in outlet, the water should clear fairly quickly, unless there is a blockage somewhere,
There does look like gravel on the grid of the drain, unless its my eyes,i`d check how clean the gully trap is.

Will have a good look tomorrow. (The gravel may only just have appeared there as I removed the tarmac from the area only a few minutes before I took the photo. There again it may already have been there. I don't recall).
Thanks so much everyone - it's a real headache at the moment, esp. as I thought we'd solved the damp issue a few weeks ago (with a £500 fix), but I guess there are several things going on.

Clearing out the cement will give you a better idea of what's going on, it certainly won't do any harm doing do. Have a look under the grate to check for blockages while you're at it, a good clean will help.
If the hole is too large for JBWeld then ready mixed fireglass repair may well do the job.
You can get this from Halfords it's called David's (a great name) ISOPON P40 Glass Fibre Repair Paste for around £12 for a reasonably sized tin. You need to makke sure the outside of the pipe is dry before applying, the set time is reasonably quick but temperature dependant.
Designed for use on car body work being expoxy based will stick to most things. The fibreglass strands provide very good strenth.
I've used this for all sorts of repair jobs include fixing a vacuum cleaner nozzle. It's simple to use just mix what you need with some of the supplied hardener and apply with a putty knife or similar.

hi
i think the pipe is short, not far enough in gully or as already been said gully has a blockage

Checked for a blockage today but couldn't find one.
it seems that the pipe the drainpipe flows into has a lip and the water coming down hits this and flows out the hole.
Will wait for the JBWeld to arrive before removing the cement etc.
