Egg Shell Colours.

I found the WI shop in Taunton this morning, and they were selling boxes of mixed colour eggs.
I know that the very dark brown eggs are marans, blue from cream legbars, but what hen lays green shelled eggs? Confused
They assured me they were hens, not duck eggs.

If anyone goes to Taunton, the shop is in Bath Place, well worth a visit.

possibly Araucana ?

My aracuanas lay a greenie blue but not green
my duck lays white

If you cross a blue egg layer and a brown egg layer, you can get green, apparently - that's what the 'Wernlas Olive' is supposed to do. The brown pigment is put down over the shell in the oviduct - but blue and white are 'all the way through' - a bit like rock Laughing - so I assume that the brown is laid down over the blue and therefore gives a green tint?

There's an interesting article here:

I have a Cream Legbar (one that doesn't have a crest) that lays an egg that is nearer green than blue - I'm fairly sure she's not a particularly pure strain
chez

If she doesn't have a crest, she probably has a wodge of gold or silver legbar in her. The blue gene is connected to the auracana, which is where the hat comes from, apparently. Gold and silvers lay white eggs and don't have hats, but are still auto-sexing.

Sorry, I am becoming a terrible nerd on the auto-sexing thing Embarassed

the cochin eggs i bought and the cochin eggs i was given were all a very pale green colour

I want pink ones. I've got blue, beige and brown speckedly and I know you can get green from aracuanad and White from lots of places. A pinky one would top it all if beautifully.
pookie

Do you mean olive green like the front middle one here GG?

Well somebody's got to... Laughing

As well as our two Cream Legbars, one of which lays a slightly greenier blue egg than the other, we have a hen that is a result (not an intentional one, apparently) of a Welsummer/Cream Legbar cross - she lays a mucky, sort of blue, sort of olive-ish egg. Her sister from the same cross just laid a mid-brown egg, but alas no more - Mr Fox bit her head off through the fence last year - just after she'd become our first hen to lay 7 eggs in 7 consecutive days. My broody is sitting on Skyline eggs, just a tad darker/greener than the one on the bottom right.

Chez is spot-on ... we crossed a Cream Legbar with a Welsummer, and got olive-green eggs. Very pretty. Cool

My aracana/legbar crosses are laying a pale pinky beige egg.

Two of the other aracanas lay blue, one lays pale blue and the other is a light olive.

I understand that Croad Langshans lay a pinky kind of egg. Not that I am encouraging anyone, you understand Wink

The skyline eggs do get greener than the ones you got from me, from a nice lime green up to dark olive.

BTW I'm sure our blue maran is a boy if you are still looking...he has a bit more copper on him now x

I'm after purple eggs now, crossing croad langshan with araucana...

Yup, ours are laying a pinky plum coloured egg. I'm aiming to breed for egg colour when I get up and running as I'm sure some strains must have a better colour than others.

Wow! I'd be well chuffed if they all lay different shades! Cool (Please ignore my 'counting chickens before they are hatched'. Wink Rolling Eyes Embarassed Laughing )

I've got a splash copper boy now, thanks. When I saw him (and his siblings) I realised your first thoughts about yours were right. Even at 5 weeks the difference is marked.

What colour do Faverolles lay? That funny little girl you gave me last year with the extra toes is a complete star! (@Chez). I've got a picture of her sitting between Pookie and Woodsprite on a bench.

If you manage that - I am going to have to demand that you supply eggs or pullets laying that colour! - A hen that lays purple eggs is just tooo tempting

Perfect for chook keepers with Goth tendancies. (Hubby insists our cockerel is a heavy metal fan!)

FAO Mochyn,
The Faverolles lay off white eggs.We have four of them, plus an unrelated cockerall.
They are the soppiest hens I,ve ever come across.Where ever I am ,they are two steps behind me,chattering away. Laughing
