Hello from Herefordshire

Hi there,
My name is Temi, I live in a village 7 miles south of Hereford, in Herefordshire. There is the wife, 2 dogs, 3 chickens and a a gypsy cob in the family.

I came across this forum by accident. It looks like an awesome corner of the internet for people passionate about sustainability.

Looking forward to interacting with some of you.

Thanks
sean

Welcome aboard. Smile

A Border Collie and an Alsatian. The Collie is quite old at 12+ years, remains the fittest out of all of us.

A Border Collie and an Alsatian. The Collie is quite old at 12+ years, remains the fittest out of all of us.

collies do seem to be at the top end of the canine stamina athletes, pretty swift as well, alsatians have more sense than to run around unless it is required but they are among the most sensible dogs i have known Laughing

my current brace are a saluki princess and a half saluki x grey palace eunuch who are quite athletic, fortunately they let me watch and bring their "playmates" to my feet so a mile amble for me and 20 miles of chases for them can be done in an hour.

You know dogs pretty well, you are spot on about my two dogs. I am a pretty active person, I do very long walks and even run at times. My border collier is never satisfied no matter how long the walk or run is. I think they should only be kept by ultra runners and farmers.

I have often wondered what the differnce between saluki and afghan hound is, apart from the fact that Afghan have longer coats.

the working lines are fairly similar but the afgan is a bit bigger and a lot hairier. they are very closely related as the afgan is a branch of the saluki line and both need a lot of maintenance.

if you get a saluki for a servant you will soon have a new master and he will be wearing your best cloak. 10th C arab saluki advice.
girl ones are worse they want ribbons and bows as well. 21stC dpack saluki advice.

they do have a lot of good points but it best to mention the other sort first. even after decades of assorted canines a royal saluki is (ongoing after 8 years) quite a steep learning curve, see arab advice above.
among their many good points that at least one of then smells of peanut cookies when she is happy and healthy, this can induce sleep with a wafting and is a bit unusual. her ability to photobomb folk and/or redirect their photoshoot towards her is awesome. family anecdote is full of examples of her mastery of mind control. she is extremely charming when meeting her public although that includes hiding her ability to make the creature from the alien movies seem a promising pet should she feel the need to.

the western show lines are fairly different in shape and appearance, the afgans have the prize for daftest, most prone to "eccentricity" and most work to keep of the two but both are well above many other breeds for those characteristics. Laughing just dont go there.PS i knew 4 show afgans fairly well, nightmare on paws is my report.

saluki x grey can be quite a combo, my one is a rescue with "issues" but well raised from a good pup such a cross could give a very tidy hound although such a beast would be unsuitable for most folk (see saluki + greyhound characteristics)
Temi

Just read a bit more about Salukis online, one site said they are very fast, they can clock up forty-five miles per hour, and can easily jump any fence under 6ft. The sites also confirm the Arab proverb you quoted, apparently Salukis are not eager to please you ( to put it diplomatically). That aspect of their character makes them sound like my cat than a dog.
I am not looking for a dog, however if I were, I will not be getting a Saluki, it sounds as if they are very hard work.

You must be a very patient person Smile

they are a bit special.
