How to take payments at shows

I think that there is plenty of information here on this but I don't know how to find it. Sorry.

A friend of mine has begun making and selling bee keeping equipment. He attends a handful of shows (not many) but is handicapped because he doesn't at the moment take anything other than cash payments. Is there anything that isn't going to cost him a fortune? He will probably only need for a small number of events so renting would seem to be the best option.

He is also spending the winter improving his website, http://melindwrvalleybees.co.uk/ I think, by starting from the beginning.
Nick

Does he have a portable telephone?
Cathryn

Yes, (although when I mentioned apps he said he wasn't quite clear about what they were. I doubt he has signal at home.)

There's a thing called Square that you can use if you have a smart phone - https://squareup.com/ I am not sure whether it's available in the UK, or whether there's a home-grown alternative. I am still googling.
Cathryn

He's been quoted huge figures by credit card companies.

He is also on a very steep learning curve. Smile

65p per transaction seems quite a bit on a typical purchase of say 15 or so Confused

Yeah, but you're not paying anything as a fixed cost for the machine, so if you only make two sales on the day all it has cost you is 1.30

fair point Rob R

I think customers find it more reassuring to have a proper chip & pin reader to use rather than plugging their card into a smartphone, too. Cathryn

Thanks Rob, I will forward all ideas to him. Nick

They've changed the fee structure to give a few more options now - I like the flat rate 10 per month which would work well for lots of little payments. We don't take that many over the phone/face to face so it's still worth sticking to the Pay & Go.
