Hairyloon	Old printers and scanners. Is there anything of use in them? If I take them to the tip then they will presumably go in their pile of WEEE, but what happens after? Can I reliably expect them to be sensibly recycled? Or are they likely to go out to one of those tips in Africa we discussed on another thread...
oldish chris	probably not. If they are taken to an official waste disposal site, I'm fairly sure that they will be responsibly put into some recycling stream or other, as per EU regulations (as forced on us by those damned civilised, responsible, forward thinking and otherwise disgusting foreigners ).

The printers contain some very useful stepper motors. They can be used to make DIY CNC machines, 3D printers and other exciting electronics projects.
The motors and controllers from scanners an be used to make similar devices
The lights from scanners can be used in some cool projects too.

You may have a local company who refurbish/recycle this sort of thing. They will refurbish what they can to sell on or use for charities and the rest they take as much out of as possible. They don't give you anything for the things, but they take them away and make as much use of them as possible. We got rid of some old stuff that way. Hairyloon

For what I have got, I cannot see that it would be economic, unless they are employing slaves.
You can buy a new all-in-one printer/scanner for <£30 so I can't see anyone paying more thn £15 for a refurbished one... Mistress Rose

When something in uneconomic they recycle all they can. The copper, gold and other things in them have some value.
