Runner Beans are poisonous to rabbits

A friend asked me to post this as she unfortunately didn't realise, nor did one of her rabbits and it subsequently died after eating runner beans. Apparently it's the poison in the beans (the same one that means we must hard boil kidney beans for 10mins to destroy the toxin) that is responsible but I have no idea if podded beans are OK. She just didn't want anyone else thinking their rabbits could eat their excess runners Crying or Very sad

runner beans are supposed to be (mildly) poisonous to people too.

Only if you're deficient in an enzyme I think. G6PDH maybe.
Jamanda's dad used to get cross if people ate uncooked runner beans because he thought they were toxic.

Just to clarify, it's OK to give them the pods (which I've been doing with no ill effects) so long as they don't get the beans themselves?

How about other animals? Poultry for instance?

The strings will be OK - it's the actual beans that are a problem. And I wouldn't read much into the fact that my Father used to get annoyed about people eating raw runner beans. He used to get annoyed about all sorts - skirt lengths, the time people came home, unsuitable boys...the list is endless.

Although I have seen the effects that eating around a kilo of raw runner beans can have on the digestive tract! (Not my own, I hasten to add).

I almost crashed a 7.5 tonne lorry because I was distracted by a short skirt.

You can feed the leaves off runner beans to rabbits. Or at least my ones as a kid never died from them.
Yeah I had heard its just the beans, though I've never given the pods either, I thought something was up with them too, no idea what. VSS
