Silver Sussex

SandraR is a woman of impeccable taste. Wink
Nicky cigreen

oh they do look nice.

what are they like for laying / meat weight?
Bebo

They lay as well as my Light Sussex. From five hens we are getting 3 to 5 eggs a day at the moment. Same size as the Lights as well and grow at about the same pace.

The Speckleds lay less and seem a bit slower growing, but get to a similar size. They are also very pretty, so I let them get away with it.

Wink of course.

Don't be shy show your others Smile
Nicky cigreen

i love the look of the speckleds - so I can see why you let them get away with it Smile
Bebo

Speckleds again.
SandraR

I have two Speckled Sussex, as well as everything else they make super mothers. Mine raised 7 turkey poults last year + a couple of broods of chicks
Bebo

And to complete the set.

I may get some Brown or Red Sussex in the future, but it isn't easy to get hold of hatching eggs for those.
Nicky cigreen

dang just when i thought i had settled on breeds...
Treacodactyl

I miss our buff and speckled hens, still my favourites. Thanks for the pictures Bebo.

Prefer the Light Sussex, myself Smile

You'll have to argue with Chez over that. She thinks white chickens are boring. Wink

Are there any breeds that originate in or around Devon?

But they have necklaces! Not quite as good as petticoats, but close.

ETA And not only does she have dreaded Leghorns, but she has *white* ones. So thrrpt Smile

the only thing i've found mentioned so far are influences of Indian/Cornish game etc.

the Plymouth rock is a different Plymouth.... Smile

She's been telling me porkies then. And I'm very impressed with the thrrpt considering the state of your gums.

Those silver Sussex look fabulous, I've never seen any before. SandraR

I first came across them many many years ago on the first farm I worked on...have always like them since. Not that easy to come by.

Their colouring is the negative version of the Light Sussex, if that makes sense.
Spruengli

Aren't they *lovely* (the Silver Sussex, that is) Very Happy

(And the Speckled, and at a pinch, the Other Sussexes... Rolling Eyes )
Bodger

I've just had to go back to Bebos picture and try to get my head around that. I'm not sure that I have but they are still very attractive birds. The hens are negatives of LS but I don't think that the cock is.
I'll have to keep on going back and having another look. scratch

PS. Has anyone ever seen any of the White Sussex that are listed as a colour?
SandraR

Sorry it was the hens I was referring too. I know with the hens what is black on the Light is silver/white on the Silver i.e neck, wings.

I can't find the breed standard for the cock...Bebo?
T.G

The silver are nice but I prefer the speckled they are smashing, the gold ones (whatever their type name might be) are rather dashing too. Bebo

PS. Has anyone ever seen any of the White Sussex that are listed as a colour?

Yes. Saw a trio for sale last year at the smallholders show in Ardingly. Same shape as the other Sussex breeds but pure white feathers. You can get hold of them, but there aren't that many about. Probably because the Lights are so popular and are quite similar.

The Silver colouring is like a reverse of the Lights, but they also have silver lacing on a lot of the body feathers as well. My cockerel wouldn't be the best example for showing, I reckon he has a bit too much white on him.
chez

I *heart* the speckled. Dennis, our first lovely cockerel was one - called after Dennis Healey because of his eyebrows.

I *do* have six white leghorns. But only because they lay like made. They DO have a personality, but I never get to see it because they are always running away from me squawking.
kirstyfern

The Coronation sussex are lovely too - grey neck feathers but hard to get hold of.
I used to have sussex,
Light;

Red;

I also had buff and speckled sussex but can't find the pictures Sad
