Sloe cordial or sloe jelly?

I've got about 10litres of sloe juice downstairs that's ready to be turned into either cordial or jelly. DH loves his cordials so he's convinced it should all be turned into that but do you think it would be worth making a few jars of jelly too?

Definitely worth making jelly if you haven't already got a few jars.

3pts juice, 3lbs sugar should produce a decent sized batch, but not too much.

Make some jelly.

I made some sloe and apple jelly a couple of weeks ago, not sure if I didn't put enough water in with the sloes as the yield was miniscule, one small jar and an inch in the bottom of another, from about a pound of sloes - very nice jelly but a lot of effort for not a lot of return. Was my first time using sloes so might have been my inexperience. Anyone had similar returns?

On the other hand I made blackberry jam today - used about 1.5 pounds of berries and yielded 4 full jars Very Happy lovely stuff!

Hm. What weight of apples did you use with your 1lb of sloes?
I'd probably use 2lb apples and 2lb sloes with water to cover them in the pan, which will probably yield about 3pts juice through the jelly bag, + 3lb sugar >>> 10 x 200g jars.
In theory you would have got 5 jars from 1lb of each fruit.

Make sure you get the mix boiling hard enough to get to setting point, otherwise you're just losing liquid through evaporation, and not getting a set.

On the other hand, I just had a bit of difficulty with a rowan and apple jelly : 3lb of each fruit, so 6lb + 5 pints water to cover, yielded 6pts juice [too much, I thought]. So I simmered it down to 3pts juice [did,'t quite mean to lose that much liquid], added 3lb sugar, and had to boil for ages to get a set. Eventual yield was still 10 200g jars.

You always get more jam, cos you've got all the fruit bits in.

Hi Gil, I used equal amount of apple to sloes but the recipe I went from used little water, only enough to cover half the fruit, so when it came to straining the liquid it was very thick and pulpy. I did top it up a bit but I guess I must have lost a lot in evaporation too. Never mind tastes fab so I'll just have to be sparing with it, but I'll remember next year to use your recipe Very Happy
