Strained-sloe cake


  • 8 oz. sloes with stones removed

  • 1 lb. self raising flour

  • 8 oz butter

  • 8 oz sugar

  • 3 eggs

  • 2 teaspoons bicarb.

  • milk to mix


  1. Rub bicarb. flour and butter together.

  2. Mix in sugar.

  3. Add eggs and milk and beat until a smooth, dropping consistency is reached.

  4. Stir in sloes.

  5. Divide mixture between two greased loaf tins and bake at 180C for about an hour - until a knife pushed into the centre comes out clean.


The basic recipe can be modified by adding mixed-spice, brandy, other fruit etc.
