suet substitute

Most of the way through making Christmas pud mix and realised I forgot veggie suet. Will butter be OK? I'm never sure about what's in that Trex stuff anyway.
mochyn

I haven't used veggie suet for some years since I discovered that it's mainly palm oil.

I use butter or oil now: even in e.g. steak & kidney pud I use oil.
jamanda

I was just worried about it keeping. Maybe I'll use oil then.
judith

Just put some more brandy in it and use butter. Works for cakes Very Happy

its funny how meat always gets slammed for being bad for the environment, but the veggie alternative is often very bad.
nats

I didn't know you could use other fats instead of suet, though it makes sense. Just weight for weight the same??

My Xmas pud recipe has no suet of any kind.
Probably in the recipe database.

As I said in the OP it needed to be veggie. I had my hand on the Atora box before realising it was no good.

I used sunflower oil and it looks fine.
mochyn

Yup, nats: weight for weight.

That's what I did.

There is no substitute for suet. If they are veggies give 'em a bit of lettuce instead. Deviants. Wink

Yep, that's the one we use and it's ideal when you've got boxes of apples sitting round the place. It's here. We actually use olive oil in dumplings rather than suet and they're just as tasty.

What quantities do you use for olive oil dumplings? Presumably you don't add water too?

We, as in OH does. She says, a cereal bowl of self raising flour, a splash of oil and a little milk to mix it all together. I there's a more exact recipe posted up somewhere.

Bugs also says she's used butter in mince meat in the past, chilled in the fridge and then grated.
