Which fabric for a homemade kimono style wrap/dressing gown?

I want to make myself a short, kimono style wrap/dressing gown thingy. I will probably have to buy the fabric online. I was looking at kimono silks and brocades but they look like they might be a bit heavy for the swishy type thing I want (girls do you know what I mean?) What type of fabric should I be looking for? Confused
tahir

Brocade'll be a bit catchy too. Do you want it to be shiny?
Stacey

Not necessarily - just swishy iykwim (or something else that begins with 's' Embarassed )
wellington womble

Slinky, sexy, slidy, silky, slippy, seductively, sensuously, swirly........

Sorry - can't help with the fabric, couldn't resist all the S words, though!

Silk taffeta might swish satisfactorily, though I think long would be better than short if you wish to swish...
Stacey

Long would probably be better - it depends on how expensive the fabric is Smile
tahir

Budget? Lots of polyester prints about that'll swish
marigold

What about viscose? That can be wonderfully swishy and should be cheaper than silk.

Really? I'm not fussy that it has to be silk Smile

If we were going fabric shopping anytime soon we'd get you some, not expensive

Sweet though, thanks Smile

I'll have a snoop about online for some polyester then.

The only thing with polyester is that some really feels crap, how does online fabric supplyu work, can you send stuff bacvk if you don't like it?

I'd go for a polyester satin.
Stacey

It was this one which caught my eye

Looks scrumptious (though personally I think viscose is nicer to wear than polyester) Very Happy .
tahir

Looks nice, doesn't look too catchy either, mind you it might have big floats on the back.

Agree, but you need a nice viscose jersey for swish

That's my understanding too - all I said was that I think that viscose nicer to wear than polyester (though I do have some nice polyester satin camisoles). I don't understand gnasher's comment at all, sorry.
gnasher

It wasn't important - just a little joke ... I work in a museum specialising in plastics ....

The material in the link is 12% silk and 88% rayon (a synthetic silk - the same as viscose, these are just fancy names - trade names sometimes for a material which is technically Cellulose Acetate).

Ah gotcha now - Stacey said she was browsing for polyester fabrics and I assumed that was what the link fabric was made of (I just looked at the pattern and the price Embarassed ).

habotai or charmeuse silk would be ideal for the light floaty swishy feel. not heavy at all...can be in the pricy side but you can get some lovely fake charmeuse.
Stacey

Oooohh habotai Cool

I'm going to Fabric Land in Bristol on Friday so I'll see what they have there.

I am now the proud owner of some very beautiful brocade. The main one is chocolate brown with a turquoise embroidered pattern and the one of the shawl part is oyster coloured with a pale blue embroidered pattern. Best of all it was £3.99 a metre!! Pics will follow when the robe is complete.

I also purchased some black material with pink skulls to make a glasto frock Embarassed Cool Laughing and some different black with pink skulls to make a dress for my imminent grandaughter. Can you buy biker boots for babies? Very Happy
