Winkles & limpetsI've managed to gather some and, last night, tried then simply boiled for 20 mins. They're fine to eat but does anyone have any more interesting recipe ideas?
Tonight I'm going to try them cooked with some ramsons and little white wine.

I got lots for Limpet TD, but winkles you just eat out of the shell, never done anything else with them.

Any limpet recipes suitable for this time of year Pricey? I don't think it's suitable weather here for a BBQ yet.

Boil your limpets, then cut off any hard bits you can feel. Slice them, fry lightly with garlic in butter. Most tasty! Or squeeze lemon, a grating of garlic and a tiny bit of butter in each shell and bung them in a hot oven (shell down, of course, on a rack).
You won't improve on winkles with just a tiny bit of vinegar or fresh mint sauce.

20 minutes is too long for winkles. Do them just long enough to kill them and for them to come easily from the shell.
I have to admit I dont like limpets.

We use then in anything really, pasta, salads, in jars of salt water to snack on, and when you have just picked them eat them raw just rinsed off in the sea water, yum.
Like cab says, boil them, but not for to long, this way you can keep them in jars of brine for months.
If I am going to do a dish with them freshly picked I don't bother boiling, just remove from the shells, wash, slice. then onion, garlic, few chillies, fry them off, then in with the limpet, 5 mins, cream, done. serve with pasta, can smell it now.
Just use your imagination, every time I use them from now on I will write the recipe down.

Regarding winkles, I'm in the boil for longer camp. They don't seem to lose much, and you can winkle more of the animal out of the shell if they're boiled a little firmer.

Yep, I don't often follow recipes anyway, just get some inspiration from them. I should have thought about garlic and chilli as one of my favourite dishes is stir fried soft shelled crabs with garlic and chilli, next time I'll try that.
I decided to cook the limpets and winkles for a decent amount of time as it was my first go at trying them, I'll try cooking for less next time. I quite liked the limpets and the winkles are ok.
Is there any specific season for them, autumn to spring for example?

Like any shellfish - any month with an R in them they're at their best.

limpets minced and fried as burgers
even slow cooking doesnt seem to soften them
winkles are best cooked in seawater

Thats what they do in Madeira, make the burgers, they are lovely. Also in New Zealand, they call them Paua ,and they are a lot bigger but the taste is the same.

I do eat them sometimes, but mainly use them for bait.

What do slipper limpets taste like then? I've often found them (especially down on the South coast), never eaten them. Seems a shame, when they're a nasty introduced species who should by rights be eaten into oblivion...

Now our local closed season for is over I gathered some more yesterday. Boiled for 6 minutes this time and they seem much better than the ones I've had before, not sure if it's because of the time of year or if it's because I'm getting used to them. Anyway, there seems to be a huge number of them about and I've only seen one other person gathering them.
I've also tried freezing some after boiling them, apparently they should be fine frozen raw or cooked.
