"Americans, when they ask you "paper or plastic", pick PAPER"

Not correct. According the Union of Concerned Scientists it takes far more energy to manufacture paper bags than plastic ones. This goes for the energy involved in recycling them as well. The best idea is to buy a "bag for life" or better still get yourself a cloth bag that will last forever.

Hi Santa, got a link to that? What about disposal? Obviously paper is biodegradable...

I learned it from a book I read, The Consumer's Guide to Effective Environmental Choices: Practical Advice from The Union of Concerned Scientists. Here is an essay I found.. https://www.essaysample.com/essay/003346.html . It's obviously a lot less scientific that the book where they do a life cycle study on bags.

Better yet, as most of us here would say:

When asked if you prefer paper or plastic, say "no thanks, I've got my own".

Confuses the heck out of some folk.

When getting a bottle of wine I usually say: "I've got hands" which causes a momentary panic on the other side of the counter.

Both choices are bad at the end of the day so we should all definitely have reusable bags. I often get people packing my bags even when I say I'll put it in my backpack "I'll put it in anyway". I tend to just unpack it and dumb it at the next checkout.

I also forgot to mention in response to tahir that more and more plastic bags are being made biodegradable. Of course them being biodegradable shouldn't be an issue as you should recycle them and in turn to that you shouldn't worry about recycling them because you shouldn't use them in the first place.
