Is that how did I find my way to this site, or a deep philiosophical question of how my life arrived at the doors of downsizing?

Regarding the site...

I've been a lurker for a while, so I can't really remember how I found my way here.

Regarding the philosophy...

I think the trigger has been living off my savings since becoming redundent, rather than immediately hunting for another job. I realised I could live on very little, and that when I was earning I was buying junk - my home is cluttered with things that I hardly ever use. I'd never really been driven by money, but this has just crystalized things for me.

  • I see houses as homes, not investment opportunities.
  • I learnt to drive, but then decided public transport was safer and more environmentally friendly.
  • I want to grow my own food (I'm a vegetarian). I've started preparing the backgarden and, depending on how that goes, I hope to have an allotment.
  • Ultimately I'd love to build myself a small environmentally sensitive underground home. While this may be nothing but a pipe-dream, I've already begun to visualise it in my mind.
  • For some reason I've become enamoured of masonary heaters, even though I've never met one in the flesh. I tease myself with the idea of making them for a living. They're beautiful things, very efficient, and produce fewer harmful emissions that regular wood stoves.

Ooops, I've whittered on a bit...

the philosophy is as important as the site, it made you find us!
